Middle Muir was granted planning permission by the Scottish Government Energy Consents and Deployment Unit, as was, in September 2014. Enabling works started in August 2016 and the main construction work for the wind farm began in April 2017. Construction work was completed in December 2018 and the wind farm is now fully operational.

Throughout the construction and site investigation phases we were fully committed to maximising local resources and expertise and wherever possible, appointed local companies to undertake the work.

Benefits continued

Middle Muir Wind Farm guarantees the local community the following benefits:

  • Community Fund of up to £255,000 per annum
  • Up to £6.37million over the life time of the wind farm project
  • Banks Renewables has contributed 50% of the annual community benefit fund (£127,500) into the employment and training initiative in partnership with SLC. This Fund will last for five years totalling £637,500 this will help create jobs, apprenticeships, training and grants for local communities
  • The opportunity to create local community trusts or bodies to develop and then deliver local action plans using the guaranteed long term funding
  • A guarantee from Banks Renewables that a minimum percentage of the total construction cost of Middle Muir Wind Farm will be directed through local companies
  • The project will support and generate habitat improvements to The Red Moss bog near Douglas, which is internationally recognized as one of Europe’s rarest and most threatened habitats

Lifetime extension

Banks Renewables is planning to submit an application to extend the lifetime of our Kype Muir Wind Farm for up to 15 years. Life extensions allow these projects to remain operational for longer, under the same conditions as they operate today.
