Location: Land to the east of the Castle Vale estate (Ashtree Drive), on the Darlington Road (the A67).  The site is around 1 mile north east of Barnard Castle town centre

Size: c5.5 hectares

Site status: The proposals were recommended for approval by the Council’s planning officers at the end of February 2021. Durham County Council’s county planning committee was minded to support the project: Nine members of the committee voted to approve the proposals, with four voting against and two abstentions at a meeting on Tuesday 2 March 2021.

• The site is currently agricultural land within Marwood Parish

Project description
• The proposals include up to 100 new family homes with a mix of property sizes and design

Economic benefits
• Estimated 60 direct and 90 indirect jobs during the three-year construction period
• Construction investment of £17 million with wider benefits for supply chain
• An additional c£180,000 council tax per annum for Durham County Council
• Additional retail spending power associated with new residents estimated at £1.4 million per year
• New housing supports employment growth aspirations in Barnard Castle
