When the area was first mined in the 1950s they left behind a flat and featureless landscape designed for agriculture, not for wildlife. We are working with local wildlife organisations to ensure our proposals for Highthorn will create a landscape designed specifically with wildlife and the local community in mind.
Some of the environmental benefits that Highthorn would deliver include:
- Banks Mining has negotiated the halt of extraction of 422,000 tonnes of sand from Druridge Bay at Hemscott Hill.
- Over 100 hectares of new wetlands and wet grassland habitats will be created in and around Druridge Bay, which is more than the current size of, the widely known, Cresswell Ponds and Druridge Pools.
- Creation of 7.9km of footpaths, bridleways and cycle paths.
- Building of wildlife hides and dark skies look outs
- Discover Druridge
If you have a keen interest in wildlife and want to help these ideas become a reality then we’d love to work with you.
