We have identified an opportunity to recover additional, high quality coal from the area of land to the south-west of the Bradley site. Using the established site infrastructure, Bradley West can be worked quickly, efficiently and with minimal impacts all by the agreed August 2021 date.

Key facts and benefits

  • No time changes – Bradley West would be fully worked and restored within the same time frame as the Bradley site (August 2021) due to the Bradley project being ahead of programme
  • Additional 90,000 tonnes of high quality coal – to supply UK industries including steel and cement manufacture. Coal is an essential constituent in these processes
  • Using UK coal reduces the use of coal imported from abroad
  • 20,000 tonnes of high quality fireclay – to supply local brickworks and help meet UK housing demand

  • Maintain skilled, well paid jobs and investment in the local economy
  • Increased Community Benefits Fund from ca. £52,000 to £100,000
  • Increased area of landscaping – including new woodland edge planting, creation of new species rich grassland, enhancement of hedgerows and creation of new field ponds and wetland areas to increase biodiversity
  • Additional 9 hectares of gifted land – guaranteeing long term benefits for wildlife and the community
  • New footpaths – improving access to the restored areas of the Pont Valley from Leadgate
