We believe that communities should be able to influence the design of our mines and should take the lead in identifying the social, economic and environmental benefits that result from our investment in their area. We have carried out extensive public consultation before for the last two years. We have listened to all the comments and suggestions from local people and have applied their priorities to the Highthorn proposals.

We submitted a planning application for the Highthorn surface mine in October 2016.
In July 2016, Northumberland County Council Strategic Planning Committee were minded to approve the planning application pending a decision by the Secretary of State (SoS) for Communities and Local Government to decide whether to ‘call-in’ the application. The SoS ‘called-in’ the decision and there will now be a Public Inquiry starting on Wednesday 31st May 2017.
A public exhibition was held at Widdrington Community Centre on Wednesday 16th September 2016, where local people were able to view the plans for Highthorn and ask the team questions relating to the proposals.
