Head of Technical

Reporting to the BRL Development Director (DD) carry out the following duties for projects as directed:

• Technical Team Management
o Manage the BRL Technical Team as directed by the DD to help ensure Business Plan delivery.
o Working with the DD and Construction Director, identify areas for work process improvements and efficiencies and support implementation of agreed initiatives.
o Establish direct relationships with key external stakeholders as agreed with the DD or as required by the role.
o Liaise closely with the procurement, construction and operations team to help ensure best practice is adopted on all technical work across all development projects.
o In the event of the DD’s absence, lead team meetings where agreed.
o Attending conferences and/or working groups as required.

• Initial Project assessment – Helping the Business Team identify and secure profitable and deliverable development opportunities through to Key Review B, including:

o Providing commercially sound technical assistance and advice to the BRL Business and Project teams including, where agreed, providing initial outline site designs considering and highlighting design opportunity and constraints.
o Participation in project reviews to advise on the interpretation of technical information and assessment of risk, including provision of technical reports for Key Review stages A and B where applicable.
o Appointment of expert 3rd party technical consultants where required to enhance the technical advice on prospects or projects

• Project development – Support to the Renewables Projects teams, where directed by the DD, to ensure satisfactory support for the development of projects through to pre-construction stage, this service to include:-

o Ensuring best commercial value is achieved through site design
o Deliver all necessary technical requirements, approvals and consents in line with agreed project programmes
o Attending public exhibitions and providing technical input to public consultations
o Participation in project reviews to advise on the interpretation of technical information
o Appointment of expert 3rd party technical consultants where required to enhance the technical advice on prospects or projects
o Ensuring all technical risks are managed and successfully resolved in line with the project and business objectives

• Project Delivery – On specific agreed projects

o Ensure all technical matters are resolved sufficient to allow Financial Close
o Provide support as required to the Construction Director and Construction Commercial Manager for the construction phase including tender process, commercial and contract negotiations, financial close due diligence and commercial and construction management and any other aspects arising during the construction phase.
o Assisting the DD to ensure aviation solutions are implemented


o All external work to be instructed in line with company policies and best practice industry standards and relevant legislation.
o All relevant Health and Safety legislation and guidance (internal and external) to be adhered to on all external appointments, including adherence to the BRL Health and Safety Plan.
o To actively promote the image of the Banks Group to ensure we continue to be regarded as a class leading renewable energy developer.


• Degree in an engineering related discipline
• Professionally Qualified
• 10 years’ experience of delivering renewables projects
• Experience of design & build contracts and NEC (or equivalent)
• Experience and evidence of public engagement initiatives
• Proven experience of dealing with local authorities and government stakeholders


• Ability to manage work programmes to critical deadlines
• Proven ability to partner with internal customers, partners and stakeholders in a manner that results in mutually positive outcomes and credibility
• Effective communication and influencing skills: concise report writing, the ability to communicate and persuade individuals as to the merits of a particular transaction
• Ability to role model actions and behaviours consistent with the company values
• Good judgement, showing logical decision making and attention to detail
• Confident, a self-starter, with the ability to operate in a dynamic challenging environment.
• A good team player capable of delivering excellent results under pressure and to strict deadlines
• A positive ‘can do’ enthusiastic attitude towards addressing the technical challenges facing Banks Group
• High personal resilience when promoting changes to the status quo
• Capable of independent thought and prepared to challenge current practice
