Energy Development Manager

We are currently looking for an Energy Development Manager to join an expanding renewables business and team, ideally based in Durham or possibly Hamilton, Scotland.

You will define how we commercialise our interests in flexible energy assets and provide commercial and technical advice to the project teams whilst also supporting the achievement of the Renewables Business Plan objectives by informing, aiding and on occasion, delivering business development proposals for new energy technology assets.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

DEVELOPMENT – Energy Generation and Flexible technologies/opportunities

 Project and Prospect Support (Up to key Review B) As a member of the Business Team identify and secure profitable and deliverable development opportunities through to Key Review B, including:

  • Review societies needs in the built environment, transport, and energy space to identify new development opportunities for BRL or Group. This includes understanding markets, technology, policy, and culture.
  • Work with the Development Director, Head of Energy Management, the Grid & Operations Director, and the Renewables Commercial Manager to devise project / commercial answers to new development opportunities and bring forward a business case for their investment where strong underlying project fundamentals exist. 
  • Ensure all new and existing generation (as directed) and flexibility proposals up to and including Key Review B have robust and optimised commercial propositions to inform investment decisions, ensuring all technical and commercial elements are correctly represented, including market value and cost of delivery.
  • Take responsibility for evolving the site finding criteria for new prospects from the learnings across the portfolio and market intelligence, always ensuring we have the best criteria applied.
  • Support the Development Director by investigating and as agreed bringing forward proof of concept projects. 
  • Establish the site finding criteria to inform the business teams, including commercial and locational drivers for new development opportunities as instructed by the Development Director.
  • Work in support of the Head of Energy Management in assessing private wire opportunities, ancillary services and direct consumer sales including market engagement, off-taker canvassing and other opportunities in diversifying revenue streams.
  • Work across the Group to identify mutually beneficial opportunities for the co-location of infrastructure, provision of services, as well as renewables / energy / green enhancement of their activities. Support the Property businesses in maximising the value in their projects pertaining to decarbonising / electrification of heat, co-location, and residual / ongoing services.

Project development (Post Key Review B) – Support to the Renewables Projects teams for the development of projects through to pre-construction stage, this service to include:

  • For solar and flexibility projects, act as the commercial project champion working with the relevant Project Managers, to ensure:
  • Projects have optimised commercial strategies.
  • Commercial and technical learnings across the portfolio are applied as part of a dynamic, ongoing review of the commercial propositions on projects, seeking to add value wherever possible.
  • The business, through the Development Director, is informed if the underlying commercial fundamentals on a project are significantly challenged relative to the agreed investment objectives.
  • Engage with the relevant supply chain, technical and commercial advisors, and key technical stakeholders for all technologies/projects to ensure commercial decisions, i.e., value assumptions and cost of delivery are fully always informed.
  • Attend public exhibitions and providing technical and commercial input to public consultations.
  • Participate in project reviews to advise on the interpretation of technical and commercial information. 

Project Delivery Post Consent Through to Sale or Operations

  • Liaise with the internal and external delivery teams to help resolve outstanding technical, commercial, or legal issues as required, helping ensure all technical and commercial matters are resolved sufficient to allow Financial Close.

Development Management 

  • Line management responsibility for our Commercial Analyst and our Graduate Analyst.
  • Ensure the BRL Health and Safety Plan and all relevant Health and Safety legislation and guidance (internal and external) are always adhered to.
  • Work with the Development Director to identify areas for work process improvements and efficiencies and help implement agreed initiatives.
  • Liaise closely with the procurement, construction, and operations team to help ensure best practice is adopted on all technical and commercial work across all development projects.
  • In the event of the Development Directors absence, lead team meetings as agreed.
  • Represent the company by attending conferences and/or working groups as required.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

ESSENTIAL:

  •  At least 5 years of experience in either the UK power sector or possibly the oil and gas sector
  • Post graduate degree in an appropriate discipline, renewable energy, energy economics, mechanical or electrical engineering
  • Awareness of UK renewable energy markets
  • Regulatory and contract knowledge and experience
  • Previous experience of managing a team
  • Highly numerate with proven analytical skills
  • Understanding of complex commercial modelling techniques
  • Advanced standard MS Office suite, notably Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Commercial awareness
  • First class written and verbal communication skills

  • The ability to work independently but enjoy the interaction and camaraderie that coming to the office provides
  • A positive ‘can do’ enthusiastic attitude towards addressing the technical challenges facing Banks Group
  • Comfortable with regular travel, sometimes at short notice
