A young Yorkshire property professional has taken the next step on his career journey after securing a high-level industry accreditation.
George Oldroyd has become a full member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) after completing the required seven years of study and practical learning.
George, who is from Wakefield, works as a development surveyor in the Yorkshire office of family-owned developers Banks Property, having joined the business two years ago as a graduate planner.
He has since worked on a range of Banks’ property and energy projects that are at different stages in the planning process, and is now taking on increased responsibility for site finding and land management work.
George holds a Masters degree in planning from Newcastle University and spent a placement year during his studies as part of the City of Edinburgh Council’s planning policy team, working on the preparation of the Edinburgh Local Development Plan.
As part of working towards his MRTPI accreditation, George was required to complete a detailed journal covering his practical experience and the ways in which it was enabling him to develop his professional knowledge and understanding.
He has now commenced the two-year process of securing a similar professional accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
George Oldroyd says: “Becoming a chartered member of a professional body like the RTPI gives you greater credibility when speaking with external stakeholders, such as land agents, landowners or council officers.
“This accreditation has helped me develop a more rounded understanding of the different challenges that a business faces when looking for its next opportunities to progress through the planning system, and is bringing direct benefits to my day-to-day work that I’m undertaking.
“Banks Property operates a planning-led site finding approach and I’m now able to use the planning knowledge, skills and experience that I’ve developed to help identify the next opportunities for us across Yorkshire.”
Part of the family-owned Banks Group, Banks Property develops brownfield and greenfield land for commercial and residential property schemes across Northern England and Scotland using a ‘development with care’ approach.
Having previously developed housing, minerals and renewable energy schemes in Sheffield, Leeds, Doncaster, Wakefield, Barnsley and Harrogate, the business is working towards further increasing its presence in Yorkshire and the Midlands and has a number of property schemes in the pipeline right across the county.
Rob Ormrod, senior land manager at Banks Property, adds: “George has made a strong start to his career with Banks and thoroughly deserves the professional recognition he’s earned from the RTPI.
“The business already has extensive experience of working right across Yorkshire and we have a clear strategy in place for increasing our footprint around the county in the years to come, a strategy in which George has a big part to play.”
