Community consultation getting under way on proposed new Chester-le-Street residential scheme

Work to introduce outline plans to the community for a proposed new residential development near Chester-le-Street is getting under way.

Durham-headquartered employer Banks Property is developing proposals for a new housing scheme on a 7.4 hectare site on Pelton Lane, Pelton.

The scheme would entail up to 200 properties, and is being designed to bring a range of economic, employment, environmental, supply chain and social benefits to the area.

Family-owned Banks Property is now beginning consultations with the community about the project, with a meeting taking place today (7 November) with Newfield & Pelton Lane Residents Association, and further meetings being scheduled with the Parish Council and other community representatives.

A leaflet will be delivered to each household in the area from the company outlining what could be included with the proposals, as well as how the community can get involved in identifying the benefits it could bring.

Banks Property will also be widening local involvement by holding public drop-in sessions about its plans at Pelton Community Centre later this month, which will also look at how the development could support local priorities for community improvement, and by distributing leaflets around the local area about the proposed scheme.

Lewis Stokes, community relations manager at The Banks Group, which employs around 400 people in total and around 126 people from County Durham, says: “There is a clear and increasingly pressing need across the region to increase the available supply of quality homes, and we firmly believe that young families should have the opportunity to live in the places where they grew up or where they wish to be.

“Our Pelton Lane scheme would be located on a site that has previously been identified as suitable for this type of development, and is in an area where we are certain there will be strong demand for the type of high quality housing that would be built on this site.

“Developments such as this need to be brought forward with direct input from local people, and we will be ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to find out more about our proposals, to give us their views and ideas about them, and to make suggestions on how this scheme could provide the resources required to help them meet their priorities for enhancing and improving community facilities.

“We have a strong track record of developing sites across County Durham which provide both quality new homes and a range of other benefits to the community, and look forward to discussing our plans for Pelton Lane with local people in the coming weeks.”

A planning application for the development is expected to be submitted to Durham County Council within the next couple of months.
