The development of a new wind farm in north Lancashire has reached its latest milestone after the first turbine was positioned at the site.
Renewable energy firm Banks Renewables, part of The Banks Group, began construction work on the £11.7m Heysham South Wind Farm last year after carrying out four months’ preparatory activity on the site, which is located around 1km to the south east of the town.
Work on the second of the wind farm’s three turbines is now underway, with the components for the remaining tower scheduled to be brought in from the Port Of Heysham via the A589 and A683 over the next couple of weeks.
Commissioning and testing work will then be carried out before the wind farm becomes fully operational in late spring.
Between ten and fifty people are being employed at any one time during the site preparation and construction phases of what is Banks Renewables’ sixth onshore wind farm.
A Heysham Wind Farm community benefits fund worth at least £300,000 across the 25-year lifespan of the wind farm will enable Banks Renewables to deliver a range of community and environmental improvements in partnership with local people, to help ensure tangible, long-term benefits result from the company’s presence in the area.
The benefits fund will go live once the wind farm begins to generate renewable energy, at which point local groups will be invited to submit funding applications for specific capital projects.
Miles Crossley, senior business development manager at Banks Renewables, says: “Work on the wind farm has progressed well, despite challenging weather conditions right through January, and it’s fantastic to see the first turbine in place.
“The Heysham South wind farm is bringing direct employment, economic and supply chain benefits to the area, and will also have a substantial long-term impact on the facilities available for local people through the community fund that will be linked to the clean, green energy it produces.”
