Staff at north east property and energy firm the Banks Group have presented a cheque for £4,000 to charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research after a year-long fundraising drive – and there’ll be more to come over the next 12 months.
At the start of 2012, the overwhelming majority of people at the Durham-based firm chose Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research to be their annual charity.
Several of the Banks fundraisers gathered at the company’s Meadowfield offices to present the money to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’s Regional Fundraising Manager for the North, Catriona Tait, who gave staff a presentation on how the money could be used and the significance that research has to patients diagnosed with a blood cancer.
Banks staff have now chosen to retain Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research as their dedicated charity for a further year, and are aiming to beat their 2012 total.
Staff from across Banks’ different areas of operation joined in a range of fundraising activities throughout the year, including workplace lunches, raffles and competitions. Banks teams also took part in the Great North Run, and in the inaugural 78-mile Etape Pennines cycling challenge through Derwentside, Weardale and Teesdale.
In addition to supporting Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, Banks’ staff have also supported a number of other charitable activities including Comic Relief, Children in Need, and Race for Life, and raised a total of £5,774 during 2012.
Mark Dowdall, environment and community director at Banks, whose 12 year-old daughter Georgina has been undergoing treatment for leukaemia, says: “Our family is immensely grateful to all our friends and colleagues at Banks who have enthusiastically raised funds over the last year to support this important charity.
“We’ve seen at first-hand the challenges that face the families and children diagnosed with blood cancers who are being treated at the RVI. The improvements being made in their treatment regimens and outlook is amazing, but there is still so much to do to find kinder treatments with less severe side effects and to find successful cures for all blood cancers.”
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of patients with all types of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Its life-saving research is focused on finding causes, improving diagnosis and treatments, and running groundbreaking clinical trials for all blood cancer patients.
Catriona Tait said: “The total monies raised by Banks Group throughout 2012 is a terrific contribution towards our ground breaking research taking place in the North East and throughout the UK.
“We rely completely on voluntary donations to fund our life saving research, and we are extremely grateful to all Banks’ staff for continuing their support to help beat blood cancer throughout 2013.”
