A North East company’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of its workforce has been recognised in a regional awards initiative.
Property and energy firm The Banks Group has achieved the Bronze level award in the Better Health At Work initiative, an NHS scheme which recognises and celebrates the hard work and commitment of local employers who are improving the health of their workplaces and their employees. The man responsible for leading Northumberland’s tourism drive has backed the positive impact that the world’s largest human landform sculpture will have on visitor numbers to England’s border county when it opens to the public.
Giles Ingram, chief executive of Northumberland Tourism, was speaking after taking a tour of the Northumberlandia landform and climbing to its highest point, which sits 34m from the ground.
The 400m long figure is now clearly visible from the roads, rail links and countryside that surround the site to the west of Cramlington, and landscaping work is scheduled to be finished later this year. Read the rest of this entry »
Performers can now make use of a new stage in Darlington after an historic bandstand in one of the town’s parks was reopened for community use following a major restoration project.
The 113-year-old North Park bandstand was restored with the help of a £10,000 grant from local developer The Banks Group, via its Banks Community Fund, and was officially reopened last year. Read the rest of this entry »
A north east surface mining company has been named by its peers as the best in the business.
Banks Mining, part of the Banks Group, was named Surface Miner Of The Year at the annual IHS McCloskey Coal UK conference in London, an award which is voted for by surface mining firms across the UK, as well as by their customers and suppliers.
Up to 50 new jobs are set to be created over the next six months with the official start of work at a new West Lothian surface mine.

The quality, effectiveness and positive community impact of the landscaping of a former surface mine to the south-east of Leeds has been recognised in a prestigious architectural awards initiative. The landscape management work carried out by Banks Mining at the 200-hectare Moss Carr site between Methley and Rothwell has been named as the winner of the Landscape category at the annual Leeds Architectural Awards, beating off competition from five other projects from across the local area. Plans to develop a new wind farm on land to the west of Bradford have reached their latest milestone with the submission of a scoping report to Bradford Metropolitan District Council.
Banks Renewables, part of the Banks Group, is currently developing plans for the proposed Thornton Moor scheme, which would be situated on moorland to the south of the town of Denholme.
The scoping report contains a wide range of research and information about the Thornton Moor project, from the background to and details of the proposed scheme through to specific information on particular aspects of its development, such as ecological surveys, landscape assessments, traffic and access reports, habitat assessments and noise assessments, that will be carried out as part of a detailed environmental assessment. One of County Durham’s rarest wildlife habitats is set to be restored to its former glory after adjacent land was purchased by Durham Wildlife Trust.
The Trust has acquired around 7.5 hectares of land at its Stanley Moss nature reserve near Sunniside for a nominal £1 from local developer the Banks Group, after Banks decided to return it to community ownership. Read the rest of this entry »
A popular Northumberland bowls club is finding the grass is much greener thanks to a four-figure donation from a north east developer.
The Alexandra Park Bowls Club in Cramlington is now enjoying the benefits of a new automatic irrigation system, which has been part-funded by a £5,000 grant from The Banks Group, via its Banks Community Fund.

Work to erect a test wind mast on the site of a proposed new wind farm in Stirlingshire has been completed.
Hamilton-based Banks Renewables is developing plans for the Ard Ghaoth Wind Farm development, which would be situated on agricultural land to the north east of Drymen, and the 60m mast is being put in place to gather wind data which will be used to inform the development of the site.
Preparatory work has been taking place on site since a planning application for the test mast was approved in November, with only one objection lodged against the plans, and the actual installation of the mast was finalised just before Christmas. Read the rest of this entry »
